Preventative medicine
We all know prevention is better than cure! When compared to treating disease, preventative medicine is easier, cheaper, less stressful, more reliable, less time consuming and, most importantly, will ensure your pets have a longer, happier and healthier life with you.
Preventative measures depend on the age of your pet. We have drawn up an outline timetable to make it easier for you to understand the current recommendations. Of course we will adapt this to the specific needs of your pet as they are all individuals we like to work together with you to maximize your pets' health! Quick check preventative healthcare timetable
Year 1 – The growth period
Feed ONLY a good quality puppy or kitten food without additional supplements unless under veterinary advice. Adult food is introduced between 6 and 18 months depending on the size of the dog.
3 x Primary vaccines usually given at 8, 12 and 16 years of age.
1 x Kennel Cough vaccine usually after 8 weeks of age (Dogs only).
Rabies vaccine and Microchip required by law before 5 mths of age (Dogs only).The rabies vaccination is repeated every three years.
Deworm puppies and kittens monthly until six months of age, then every 3-4 months for the rest of their lives.
Skin parasite prevention for (fleas, ticks, mites) starts at 3-5 mths of age for the rest of their lives.
Heartworm prevention in dogs starts before 5 months and goes on through life. If the dog is older than five months of age it may need a blood test to check for infection before starting prevention.
Desex between 6-12 months.
Years 2-7 – The Adult Years.
Feed ONLY a good quality adult food without additional supplements unless under veterinary advice.
Annual Adult medical check up and vaccinations.
Maintain heartworm and skin parasite prevention, and deworm every 3-4 mths.
Years 8-12 – The Senior Years.
Feed ONLY a good quality Senior food without additional supplements unless under veterinary advice.
Maintain heartworm and skin parasite prevention, and deworm every 3-4 mths.
Annual Senior medical check up and vaccinations.
A urine sample should be checked at least once yearly in every senior pet. Blood tests may be appropriate for certain individuals.
